Let the Hunger Games Fandom Naming Revolution Begin!

I like Gamers or Hungry Gamers.

What about just Tributes? Because we essentially take part in the Hunger Games and the fight against the Capitol as we follow Katniss through her journey. As “Tributes” we could split into different groups e.g. Team Katniss; just like we do now without a fan name.

It was either that or “Fans on Fire”… Just refer to us all as one huge group.

I vote for “fans”. As a fan, I have no desire to have the stigma of a nickname. The books are superior. The films are anchored by Academy Award caliber actors and director. We need to rise above. If THG fans are viewed as obsessive as Twilight fans, I’ll just keep my interest to myself which would be a bummer.

Tributes! It makes perfect sense. Mockingjay belongs to Katniss, Rockingjays is so cheesy, and jabberjays doesn’t make sense. We are tributes, we are poeple from around the world involved in the Hunger Games ( not literally but referring to the book) it just makes sense, isn’t cheesy! I’m a tribute:) may the odds be ever in my favor.

My favorite is Mockingjays, cause it says where on Katniss’s side and against the capitol. I also like tributes and I would love something about “more than just a piece” thing but I don’t know what that could be…. but something that is against the capitol, like Mockingjays!

uh what panemaniacs…lol jk. there is way to many of us for us all to be called “tributes” if we want to be in line with the books… this is tough.

Mockingjays is the only one that makes sense! I would never want to BE a tribute so that’s totally out for me, victors seems kinda lame, but the mockingjay carries through the whole story all three books and is vital to the story line….

Tributes is my top choice but Mockingjays sounds really cool!

Being called a Tribute would be too disturbing because it acknowledges The Games in a glorified fashion that is completely contradictory to everything the books symbolize.

Tributes was my first choice, but I agree that it makes The Games seem somewhat glorified.. I think Mockingjays would be perfect since they are unique to the series and play a huge role, just like the fans

Like Ryan, I first thought tributes, but, also like Ryan, I totally disagree with the name now. Mockingjays could be good, but Katniss was, is, and will always be the first, best, and last Mockingjay. (Personally, I don’t think most actresses could do her justice. I don’t know anything about Jennifer, but… I’ll keep my fingers crossed.) Perhaps a variation on Notorious’s Katters?
In Harry Potter (shut up, everything comes back to Harry Potter in the end), the director (or producer or something, I don’t actually remember) said that they had to remember that it was Harry’s story, that they were portraying Harry’s story. But they got it wrong! (This has a HG point, just keep reading.) It was more than just Harry’s, it was the story of, literally, a whole world, a Wizarding World, fighting a dark wizard. So, truly, fans don’t usually think of themselves as Potter-heads, because the books are not Harry’s, screw the title. They are a legacy.
HP is better, of course, but that’s HG’s story, too, isn’t it? It’s not just Kat’s story. It’s the story of a rebellion against a very dark, twisted government. We should be something that envelopes the whole idea, not just something that represents the first or last book. I’m not creative, so very unfortunately I can’t think of something, but darn it all to Tarturus if I’ll be a pawn in the Capitol’s game (Tribute) or a knock-off of a teenage gladiator (Mockingjay).
I don’t know… perhaps Dandelions? Like, in the first book, how dandelions symbolized hope for Katniss? In war, isn’t hope really the only thing that keeps a soldier fighting? I guess outsiders wouldn’t instantly think, “Dandelions? Oh – Hunger Games, obviously. Only a dunderhead would miss the obvious connection.”, and the inside joke of it would get old quickly, but… That’s my contribution. This super, super, super, super long post, and the name Dandelion.

I like Tributes and Jabberjays, but if I had to choose it would be Tributes.

OK, what if we are called simply “Rebels”, because the revolution is practically at the center of the trilogy? It incites people to change, rebel, rise, fight against old and unjust practices, against a totalitarian ruthless regime, and start a new world. Suzanne practically shows us the nasty things that happen into our world and states that if we would be united, if we would rebel, we could change the world for the best. We couldn’t be “Panemanians”, because we want a better world and we shouldn’t be “tributes”, because we are not arbitrarily picked, we volunteer to love this book on our own. OK, or we could simply stay “THG fans”…what’s wrong with that?

How about something that has to do with the rebellion?…The Game Rebels? or possibly just the Rebels? just a thought.

All i can say is that it sounds really really wrong (if you know what I’m referring too) Also I like tributes, sponsers, and mockingfans (not mockingjay because thats Katniss’ of course) And games sounds like what it usually means. As in someone who plays xbox, wii, ds ect.

I woudn’t say “mockingjays” because the name’s already taken by Katniss; she’s the only one that can be the Mockingjay. I agree with the people saying that “tributes” glorifies the games – the same with “victors”. And not “rebels” either because it’s a normal word and doesn’t refer specifically to the Hunger Games.

I like composed words, like “firejays” (suggested by Melani on hunger-games.net) and “rockingjays” (but this one already refers to the HG-fans musicians). Or words relating to the HG fandom in general: Hunger Gamers (not just “Gamers”). I love “Fans on Fire”! and “hungerjays”. “Panemites” or “panemaniacs” are also great, but non-HG fans might not get it.

I was thinking, this may not be about the fandom name but can relate to it, you know how there is all the team katniss, team peeta and all they can be evolved into Districts also. Like, for example, someone would be DIstrict 12, just like someone wold say im team katniss…?…yea it just popped in my head. im lame. ^_^

I think something to do with fire or sparks would be appropriate because it symbolizes not only the rebellion but also how the Capitol forced Katniss into choosing a certain personality to portray for herself going into the games(to get sponsers) and how Cinna was able to create something unexpected that really sparked the rebellion. It should also set us apart from other series because it’s so different and shouldn’t be compared to things like Tw*l*ght.

Gamers are the best, but it sort of sounds like we’re addicted to gaming, like on the Xbox or something. So I like tributes… but do you really think people are goning to understand it when we’re like – “Yeah I’m a die hard tribute!” – They’ll be really confused. “Twihards” actually had some part of the name of the movie in it sooo it made a little more sense. But with this title it’s sort of hard to choose. I say Gamers, or Peetaphiles.. lol(: … but someone suggested Hungarians .. ?! Thats referring to another country!

Well…I’m really used to calling us Jabberjays…since, well, it’s from the book, and we “jabber” on about how great THG is. Actually, it’s a title that we on the Scholastic Hunger Games Board gave ourselves…I usually apply that to the whole fandom.

It needs to be something catchy, I wish I was creative, but the more I think about it, you don’t want it to be something that’s already in the book but more a unique combination of parts….. I like the Mockingjays because isn’t it really what the books are about? how Katniss became the Mockingjay, the symbol of the rebellion against the horribly cruelty of the Capitol? that is what we should represent, the Districts uniting to gain their freedom.

I like the idea of rebels. It’s better than anything referring to Panem or the Games or the Capitol (no, I do NOT want to be a jabberjay!), instead focusing on the importance of standing up to human rights and oppression. Also, I like to think of it as us as a fanbase rebelling against some YA fiction that gives people the wrong idea about what kind of people everyone who reads YA fiction is. It’s also a broader term than mockingjays, for example, which allows sub-fandoms to be formed.

However, I think we need to give “rebels” a bit of a make-over to make it sound spiffier. So I suggest “the Rebellion.” It turns us into a united front, a collective, where you can say “I’m part of the Rebellion” rather than “I’m a rebel,” which to my mind at least also has a more negative ring to it. And if you want to refer to yourself as an individual, you’d still be able to do that with the aforementioned sub-fandoms.

I like Gamers or Tributes.

They are original and do not refer to the Capitol as if we were just Capitol people, but it doesn’t just talk about one of the rebels, it talks about the whole rebellion, they’re symbols of the rebellion which is the center of the books! So I think that’s a fantastic idea

I’m against “Tributes”. Okay, it sounds nice, and it’s cool, but to me it makes me feel like I’m a real fanatic about HG. “I’m a Tribute”, means that I’m completely devoted to HG, like I’m the victim. Also, are not they the show? In fact, do we really want to be associated to “victims” and “freaks”? Not me.

About “Mockingjays”, sounds also very nice. Harmonious. But I’m French, you see, and I’m very afraid about the French translation of this nickname! XD (If it will be traducted).

To me, “Sponsors” is not the perfection, but the best proposition we made for the moment. Maybe I’m to serious in my ideas, but it could be a tactful way to remember the film staff that if HG has this success it’s obviously because we, fans, are here! Without us, they are nothing. To be less serious, I find this name very ammusing though!

I really like that firejays one someone posted on here.

Of the, ‘jays’ ones, why would EOnline choose jabberjays instead of mockingjays? Mockingjays just seems like the more obvious choice to me. And jabberjay almost seems like an insult; I don’t want to think I ‘jabber’ on about THG… I don’t know, I’ve just never heard of jabbering as a good thing. I guess people can interpret it however they want, but I don’t think I like it. I’m not too keen on being a capitol creation either. Meh.

Mockingjays are better symbols in the books, and firejays is a nice compound that encompasses many of the books’ themes. (Plus firejays just sounds cool haha.) I vote for one of those.

Tributes, its easy to remember, the media can´t make fun out of it, you can make witty word games (like the tributes are exicted for the hunger games).

in the end the media is just as manipulative as the Capitol, in someway they are always playing with us. we are tributes of the media industry.

To call us Gamers or Hungry Gamers is too obvious. Anybody who hasn’t read the books can still understand it.

To call us Mockingjays is also something that non-fans can understand also as it’s the name of one of the books. It’d be like calling us “CatchingFires”. Plus, there’s only one Mockingjay.

Jabberjays are evil.

Rebels is a cool name but it is a real word. When we’re all in line for the movie it’ll be weird when they say “thousands of rebels lined up today” because it sounds like we’re going to have an organized riot! Because it’s a regularly used, normal word it could be easily confusing in a sentence.

Tributes sounds nice, is simple, and has a detectable meaning. However, you have to know something about the books to get it! After all, we’re Tributes alongside Katniss!

I feel like there are a lot of really awesome names being thrown out but its difficult to say that they will be able to represent this fandom because people who havent read the books wont understand what it means. I know that many people will say that it doesnt matter to those people but lets be honest the media and those people are the ones that use the names the most. Calling us the Tributes for example wouldnt make sense, it wouldnt define us as a group because no one else would understand it. Thats why trekkies and twihards has worked, because people see part of the title in it and know what they are. Without that recognition of what the book/ movie there isnt much recognition in the name.

Hungerians. All the way. It’s a really cool play on words. But it has to be “hunger” with an “e”, not an “a”. We are Hunger Games Fans, people. Not Hungary fans (not that Hungary isn’t cool, lol).

Here’s a list of names that could be taken from the Hunger Games itself:

Rebels, tributes, game makers, Mockingjays, Panemians, The Hungry, Hobs, Seams, HG fans (obviously), Team 12, the District citizens, or MUTTS.

Yes, not all would be recognized, but it’s hard to do what the Twihards did, ours is two words, not one. With that cleared up, all in all we’re HG fans, some less than others.

JABBERJAYS: I always referred to the fandom as this. But somebody made a good point: jabberjays are instruments of the Capitol.

MOCKINGJAYS: No. This is strictly reserved for Katniss.

TRIBUTES: Think through this people. I mean, in all the games (with the exception of the 74th, with 2 victors, and the 2nd Quarter Quell, where no one won) only one tribute lived. So, what, one of us reigns over all, or, oh, I’m sorry, 73 of us? Tributes=BAD NAME!!!

I like Panemians, and Hungerians (gosh, now I’m sorta hungry. Go figure).

It’s not about finding a “cool” sounding name, I think it should be what most fans prefer.

From what I’ve seen, Tributes is favored.

Hunger Games follows the story of Tributes. The story is about them, and we walk with them. Some people believe it is too negative a connotation, but I don’t think so. Tributes are THE CORE of the Hunger Games. Although sad and unfortunate, we are always rooting for them. Which is why I think Hunger Games fans should be called Tributes.

fuckyeahdistrict12.tumblr also did a poll with 111 responses and I found that most people wanted Tributes, and the second most favored was Mockingjays. I think it should be either or, since they seem to be the most popular.

Gamers is a DEFINITE NO. There’s already a group that calls themselves Gamers!

Rebels should be a NO as well. It’s just not specific enough. Plus I think of Star Wars when I hear it.

Whether it is Tributes, Mockingjays, or another name, I just hope that it ends up being what the majority of us want.

I don’t know why everybody is worried about The Hunger Games becoming like Twlight! Yes, I’m SURE it will become as big a franchise as Twilight, but there’s one very distinctive, very LARGE difference between the two:

THE HUNGER GAMES IS A WELL WRITTEN STORY WITH AN AMAZING PLOT AND CHARACTERS, AND GOOD THEMES.

Twilight is NOTHING like Hunger Games in the story, so not to worry!

Oh and I vote for Tributes or Mockingjays!:)

Keep it simple & include the title: Hunger Fans or Hunger Games Fans (abbreviate it “HG Fans” in print). I like (love) the Rockingjays for the fan music, so having another “-jay” ending for the fans might seem overkill. And while I like the tributes, rebels, sponsors, etc., I agree that it really should have part of the title in it to be recognizable. Just my 2¢.

I like Mockingeeks, of Mockingflames, or Firejays. Especially Mockingeeks (I saw it on myhungergames.com). I like Jenna’s thing, the Panemaniacs. Sherry, I don’t like the rebels because it’s a very empty statement. If you say, ‘I’m a total Rebel!” people will be like, “Oh, okay, you threw a paper airplane in class or vandalized a stop sign.” If you say “I’m a Mockingeek!” or, “I’m a Panemaniac!”, It has some significance.

Also, I like Fandems, because it’s kind of like, “I’m a Fandem of Panem, and I’m part of the fandom of Panem!”

Sunny, Panem was a land of injustice and poverty. The capitol sat by as its own districts people died and as children, not even yet adults, murdered each other for their mere entertainment. Panem is not the kind of thing i’d want the hunger games fandom name to be a part of.

The Hungry Fans…?haha… Really Love Tributes though…

I say Tributes, idk why but to be it just fits. Tributes or Victors.

We are a new community, we are a new district, we are District 14!!!! Or the Hungerjays

Well…in my opinion, like Katniss said, Jabberjays actually backfired on the Capitol, since the rebels fed them false information, so technically they don’t mean we support the Capitol. Mockingjays might confuse some people…they might think we’re referring to the third book.

Hahaha idk. The media will probably end up calling us Jabberjays anyway, because it’s catchy and that’s all they’re looking for in the huge overrated franchise that they’ll make out of our precious books. :/

Well if Katniss was the girl on fire then everyone that suports here must be fans of the fire (or fans on fire) Or we can just be District 14 and nobody that havent read the book will get anything

I can totally see a reporter or online celeb mag saying, “Attention District 14! We have some breaking news on The Hunger Games film!” or the people saying, “Tons of District 14-ers lined up today to see the movie of the year, The Hunger Games.”

I’m so protective over these books, and really think the cast will nail it. Suzanne had a hand in the script so I trust that the movies will be amazing
It all still makes me nervous though, they cant make the movies better than the books ill be shocked if they figure that out, but I’m still excited!

JABBERJAYS!!! We are Hunger Games fans, and we JABBER all day long about the books? You guys want to be Tributes, who are the Capitol’s lap dogs, and DIE? Pff… and Mockingjays, there’s only one Mockingjay, Katniss. And mockingjays are just a result of jabberjays awesomeness

Why don’t we just call ourselves the “Hunger-fans”? It’s simple, easy to remember and have everything to do with the story, after all, we are hungry for the games…

I love the ideas of:
Tributes(not to glorify the games, but aren’t we all tributes to society in a way? besides, most of the tributes hated the games except for the careers)
Fans on Fire
Rebels
Mockingjays/firejays
District 14

These names closely relate to the book,, but also don’t make we as fans seem almost…too crazy? Something like “hungerheads” makes me think of a bunch of people who are “controlled” by the book. We need a proud name with meaning!

I vote for just ‘fans’. There are no other way to call us fans by some other names without sounding ridiculous. Others who are not familiar with the trilogy won’t understand most of the nicknames suggested and I certainly do not want to be misunderstood as someone as obsessive as the Twihards.

The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay are too ingeniously written to deserve being lowered down to the level of Twilight.

I reckon us Hunger Games fans need a name that is a play on the words and sounds of “hunger games” or something strongly related to the book and is a re-occuring theme? I like Jabberjays, Tributes, Mockingjays, District 14-ers Hunger Flames and Panemaniacs; in that order.

Panematics and Tributes are the top two for me.

I agree with all the poeple out there that say “Hunger Games is NOTHING like Twilight.” I personally have NOTHING on Twilight but I really don’t want Hunger Games turning into another “Oh my god which team are you?” Cause i’m just like -.- Team Haymitch… But yeah I personally LOVE Sponsers because thats what we do. We sit here and hear all about the games and we encourage it for our own entertainment and even more we pay to be interested in it. Okie now I make no sense and am blabbing on

Mockingjays- There is only one true Mockingjay.
Tributes- We are not Tributes, we don’t truly know what it’s like to be in the Arena.
12ers/13ers- I think it’s a little silly and not very original.

I do however think something about Bread or something like that. And as for the “Peetaphiles” That might raise some questions

This might sound strange, but I really love ‘rebels’. I think there’s something about it which has a cool ring to it. I think ‘tributes’ is okay, but I think it’s referring too much of what goes on in the arena. ‘Sponsors’ is quite good. I don’t know.

I reckon Tributes is great and I know lots of people on this site and others agree with me and say that Tributes would be great because we are all a part of the Hunger Games (book not event). We were reaped with Prim, volunteered with Katniss. Fell in love with Peeta, and defeated the Capitol and won the 74th Annual Hunger Games with Katniss. We followed Katniss on her journey as a girl from the Seam, to a Tribute in the twisted Capitol entertainment, to a victor of the Hunger Games with Peeta. TRIBUTES FOR THE WIN
