RUMOR ALERT: Will Hunger Games Movie Be 'Steamier' Than The Books?

6/8/2011Hunger Games Movie

Celebuzz.com published a story earlier today speculating that the Hunger Games movie may be more focused on romance than the novel it’s based on:

In their story, L&S reports that to make the first movie a bit more interesting, “scenes have been added in to give the heartthrob a larger role on-screen and make the love triangle steamier and a bigger aspect early on in the franchise.” That will surely make the love triangle between hotties Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth that much more fun to watch.

Of course, all of this is just rumors at this point, and we should all take comfort in the fact that Suzanne Collins was a co-writer on the final draft of the script which seems to suggest that the movie won’t stray too far from the central themes of the book.

While the romance is an important element in the stories, it is definitely not the main focus of Katniss.  We hope the Lionsgate understands this the Hunger Games is far more than a love-triangle– it is an exploration of sacrifice, survival, oppression, and (especially in the first book) the dangers of a culture obsessed with entertainment.

Katniss is not Bella Swan– her decisions are far greater than matters of the heart; they are a matter of life and death.

However, the love-triangle between Peeta, Katniss, and Gale can be done tastefully and relatively unobtrusively.  For example, take an already ‘steamy’ piece like the cave scene, and increase the tension by showing Gale’s reaction as he watches Peeta and Katniss from his home in District 12.  That wouldn’t change Katniss’s thoughts and feelings in the cave, but it would definitely show that her relationship with Gale is not as uncomplicated as she wants to believe.

How would you feel if more romance was injected into the film?  Let us know in the comments!

  • I dislike this, the hunger games is NOT a romance…Katniss dosent even really develop any feeling for peeta till the end of the 2nd book-gale is never more than a good friend/hunting partner to her-dont change anything!!!!!

“Steamier” is not a very good thing sometimes for the younger viewers who already walk a thin line with their parents that dislike the plot of the books. I hope it is only rumor and only that, because HG does not need the stereotypical YA love triangle to flare in the first movie. They need to see the aspect and that it is NOT a movie based on romance as is Twilight. Too much drama means you lose a lot of viewers mostly male. Many highly protective parents may also go on alert and instantly disagree with the watching of the movie and instantly link it to the book, therefor, not approving.

  • Like Vikki said, the book is NO WAY a romance book. But i have good feelings this is just a rumor because S.C. Had a big part in the writing of the script and the crew isn’t giving out information about the script so how would this, shall i say, stupid rumor magazine find out about extra scenes?

  • I think it’s important to show how close Katniss and Gale are vs how Katniss and Peeta, but I hope they don’t make it the central story of the book. I am all for seeing more Liam Hemsworth, but I really don’t want to see this movie turn into a love story.

I agree the love triangle is not to detailed in the book, and to make it more ‘steamier’ they don’t have to add more kiss scenes with Peeta and Katniss, the idea of showing Gales reaction is a great example of making things more intense in the love triangle. And since Suzanne Collins was co-writer for the script, the movie will not stray too far from it’s original story.

I’m not concerned about the hunger games turning into a romance…I’m positive that the movie will still be a social commentary. I think if people didn’t notice some part of a love triangle before maybe they were reading a different book than I.

I don’t think they can really change it much besides showing Gale’s reaction, which Katniss is completely unaware of.

This love thing is the reason I’m re-reading the books (even though I read them only 2 weeks ago!). A lady at work and I were discussing it, she thought the love triangle thing was a prominent part of the story, whereas i read Katniss to be more calculating and not interested in romance till the last book…So I’m not sure, but a little steam from Gale’s ears wouldn’t be all bad ;)

No. Absolutely not. Suzanne Collins did NOT write these books based on the romance between Katniss, Peeta and Gale. That is just not what it’s about. This book is not just another teen romance novel; it’s about the will to survive, sacrifice for the people we love, the twisted entertainment of the future world, and above all, war. War is not pretty and happy and sparkly; neither are these books. I’m afraid this is what Lionsgate will make of it just to captivate more audiences; then they are completely missing the point. Now I’m not saying romance isn’t involved at all (team Gale!:). However, fans of the Hunger Games enjoy the love triangle-they also feel deeply about the main aspect of the book. I for one will be really disappointed if Lionsgate misses the mark on this; it would just really be unacceptable.

I really hope this is a rumor, if not it’s a terrible idea. The Hunger Games books do not need to be made “more interesting”, that’s just silly. If people want to witness something steamier then they’d be better off watching a soap opera because there are bigger things going on in these books.

  • I do hope this is a rumor, but I don’t believe this through because of the fact that life & style wrote it.

And, as said in the article, Suzanne Collins co-writes the script so there’s a big possibility that it will not focus on the love triangle

wow seeing everyones response to a little bit more detailed love triangle I have to say it would be a bad move for Director to do because we had enough of the love triangle thing with twilight and i want some action and adventure but a little romance like the book has is alright.

I think that there should be just the right amound of the love triangle.Yes,Hunger Games is no ABOUT this love triangle but it does contain it.So maybe just a little more steam than we have in the book would be good.We could see how Peeta was actually trying to protect Katniss and how difficult this was for him(sth that we find out in the book but we don’t really attend) and also how Gale reacts. I can’t judge if I don’t see the result first….What I really care about is the movie being dramatic enough and showing off the complex feelings and the tragic situations…

  • I think that they will show us her relationship with gale in the begining, too see that even if she didn’t know, he did like her more than like a friend. We can see this in the book too, in a way.
Also we already knew that all the kisses she shared in the arena with peeta will be seen by gale at home, so we will see his reactions. Poor guy…

People just don’t understand that romantic doesn’t mean a lot of making out, and it doesn mean sex…. I am on for a bit of romance, and i dodn’t think it will alter the story-line.. It will just show us how much the guys liked katniss while she didn’t really know it.

And yes, there was a love triangle with katniss always thinking about the guy that wasn’t next to her, but i hope they will keep the priorities in order: survival
    first, romance last…

The was only one moment in the book when i wanted more romance.. Their last night before the games in the second book -i hope i am right, i’ve read the books a long, long time ago- when katniss and peeta share the same space to sleep.. I wouldn’t be too upset if they decided to make it just a tiny-tiny bit more romantic ;) )
don’t kill me for cheering up for these two, i just always loved them together, even though katniss had her priorities in order and she would always have some more important things on her mind :)

  • We don’t really see Gale that often in the books, so doe sthe love-triangle part mean that the Gale-sneaking-into-the-Capitol rumor is true?
God, no!!!! This. Is. Terrible. There was barely any romance in the first book! How can they make it steamier?!?! I HATE HOLLYWOOD.
Or whoever are doing the movies. Whatever.

This saddens me. I understand that Suzanne Collins viewed the main dramatic question of THG movie to be different from the books, (‘what happens to Katniss and Peeta’ as opposed to, ‘will Katniss live?’ as in the novels), but ‘steamy’ is a terrible word to describe anything in this story. Making steamy teen romance the central plot of THG ruins some of its credibility as social commentary.

Suzanne Collins didn’t write THG after reading Twilight or bad romantic fan-fiction. She wrote it after reading Greek mythology, flipping channels between reality shows and Iraq coverage, and hearing war stories from her father. And I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I didn’t fall in love with THG as a story based solely upon wondering what would happen between Katniss/Peeta/Gale, but rather, I fell in love with *all* of the characters, I hungered to see how *all* of their lives panned out, and my suspense throughout the series rested on the fate of Panem. Yes, I had my thoughts on who I wanted Katniss to end up with. But at the end of the Mockingjay, I didn’t cry when the man she didn’t choose was left behind (I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m not being specific). I cried at the deaths of the other people that Katniss held so dear.

The romance doesn’t need more screentime. Its all the other relationships that do.

YES! Great idea about the love scene. Honestly, this book would be very boring for YA readers if it wasn’t for all those “steamy” situations in every book. AND in the movie, I would be THRILLED if they showed Gale’s reaction to Katniss and Peeta kissing… that would be interesting… and I’ve always wanted to know how he did react. Can’t wait to see how everything turns out (:

And by the way Kathleen ^ The movie would be unbelievably boring for teens if the other relationships had more screen time. You’re obviously not a teenager yourself. Don’t get me wrong, I would hate it if they changed the story to add in more stuff, that’s just selfish and greedy, but as a 14 year old girl I think my friends and I would agree that our peers would love it if Peeta, Gale and Katniss got a little more attention to their “love triangle” crap than it did in the book. But I’m not sure what guys would think about it… :/

You are correct, I am not a teenager. But I am a young adult (22), and I can’t say that my age would necessarily make a difference in my thoughts on ‘steamy’ romance… I’m sure I would have felt the same way 5 years earlier. I must respectfully disagree that adding parts to other relationships would be boring, since I didn’t find the characters or their relationships boring at all, but I suppose that’s just an opinion.

It’s not that I don’t want to see Gale’s reactions to the games and so on and so forth, I just don’t want that to be overloaded into the story when, relationship-wise, I’d rather see things like Prim and Katniss together when they were younger, or more of Finnick or the other victors. (I mean, who doesn’t want to see more of Finnick? haha). Overall, I just don’t want the production to forget that the romance in THG is brilliant but still secondary to the deeper themes in the novels, I guess.
