Is the ‘Hunger Games’ “Sexually Explicit?”
Apparently we missed this R rated version of the Hunger Games. Maybe there was more to cave scene? It’s Banned Books Week and looking back at last years list, The Hunger Games was #5 on the American Literary Association’s list of most challenged books of 2010. It figures since the Hunger Games series has a lot of violence throughout the series. But the ALA listed the Hunger Games as Banned/Challenged for the following reasons: Sexually Explicit, Unsuited to Age Group, Violence.
I bet your scratching your heads as much as we are? Since when is Katniss and Peeta kissing and cuddling in the cave considered sexually explicit?

Maybe they have a problem with a sixteen-year-old girl standing naked infront of Cinna? Or they think teenagers shouldn’t share a sleeping bag? I think they’re really stretching here, do they give any specifics on why they think it’s sexually explicit?

Or maybe it’s the fact that she’s using the kissing for an end goal? I’m not sure there’s a whole lot of sexually explicit material for them to question, but a woman using intimacy (read: kisses) for something other than baby-making is OMGwrong. (I’m being sarcastic, if you didn’t pick up on it…;) )

“It’s not going to be an R-rated movie because I want the 12- and 13- and 14-year-old-fans to be able to go see it,” says Ross. “This book means too much to too many teenagers for it not to be PG-13. It’s their story and they deserve to be able to access it completely. And I don’t think it needs to be more extreme than that.”

My English said this and I agree because, honestly, a lot of books that have been “banned”, shouldn’t be banned. Stuff like rape (though that’s not in The Hunger Games), violence, war and so much more happens in the real world too. If you can’t write it down, what can you do?

We all know Katniss… If that sort of thing happened in the book, then it would be the total opposite of her personality. So those people need to actually need top read the book (because they probably haven’t) and get some Hunger Games knowledge because it is NOT “Sexually Explicit”

I think banning it is WAY overboard, but there is a lot of nudity for YA. But they never have sex, there’s just naked people. So it should be ‘for some nudity’ not ‘sexually explicit.’

There are way worse movies with gratuitous female nudity that are rated PG-13 (in Canada where I am from). To pick on the type of sensuality/caring in the Hunger Games is just Awful – even if there was some nudity! (which there wasen’t!!!!!)

The Hunger Games shouldn’t be banned because personally Twilight is more sexually explicit. In the fourth book they describe in detail how they made babies and the Hunger Games has none of that stuff!
