It’s week 6 for Finding Finnick Odair! Each week we will be discussing a new actor and the pro’s and con’s as to why he should be Finnick. As always, remember that this is just our picks for Finnick. As far as we know casting for Catching Fire hasn’t begun yet.

Meet Alex Pettyfer. Alex is known for various roles in movies such as I Am Number Four, Beastly, In Time, and Alex Rider. People either LOVE the idea of Alex playing a role in a favorite book series (a la Mortal Instrument series) or they really dislike him. Fan-sites weigh in on Alex and his potential to play Finnick:

Arianna: Let’s face it. Alex Pettfer is gorgeous. I think the vast majority of woman out there will agree with me on this one. While he is gorgeous, there is one thing that stands in my way of absolutely loving him to be Finnick. This guy has an ego the size of Texas. He knows he hot, and he thinks he’s a bad ass actor. While he is a good actor in I Am Number Four and Beastly, Pettyfer still has a long way to go in the acting industry. While he has the looks, I don’t believe he could portray the emotional side of Finnick that we fell in love with in the books. So thus, I’ll have to pass on the Pettyfer for Finnick campaign.

Elena: Alex Pettyfer is reallly REALLY attractive. He’s been on my radar for a couple years now mostly because he’s really REALLY attractive. I’ve been known to watch movies just because Alex Pettyfer is in them and I think he’s hot. Having said that I don’t think he’s a very good actor. I’ll admit that I’ve only seen him in a couple roles and those specific roles are YA books adapted to film so we know he has experience there. But he just wasn’t that good. Physically, he has all the elements for Finnick. But the skill just isn’t there and I think we can come up with a better option for character.

Adam & Savanna: Physically, Alex Pettyfer does seem to share a few qualities with our favorite victor. But we aren’t certain if his acting skills are up to snuff. In his review of Beastly last year, Variety critic Paul Debruge asserted that Pettyfer “proves incapable of conveying [...] anguish,” which leads us to believe that the complexities of Finnick might be beyond his range. We also have to admit that we’re a bit concerned about the negative reputation that Pettyfer has already built for himself. Of course, there’s no way to know what’s true and what isn’t, but the 21-year-old actor does not seem to have endeared himself to Hollywood at all. The fact that he allegedly turned down the role of Jace in The Mortal Instruments because he wasn’t offered the $10 million paycheck he demanded is a little off-putting as well.

The Hob

Michelle: Not gonna lie, I am a big fan of Alex Pettyfer’s general existence – as are most of The Hob girls. His Google Image page is basically a cure-all, like a combo of cupcakes and a Sephora gift card. So, do we think he’d be a good fit, physically, for Finnick? YOU BETCHA. Of course, there’s so much more to Finnick than being a stunner. He’s one of the most layered characters in the series – charming and brave but broken. So, what most fans are curious about is if AP has the acting chops to pull it all off. Our answer may not be the most popular, but we think he can. He’s pretty skilled at playing arrogant (Tormented) and has a couple action movies under his belt (Alex Rider and I Am Number Four) for when the role becomes more physical. And while he hasn’t really shown his vulnerable side on the big screen, we can’t help being optimistic. He’s certainly improving as his career progresses – and the biggest vote of confidence might be his joining the cast of Magic Mike, where he worked with Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh (who, coincidentally, directed the second unit of The Hunger Games). Hard to disregard that. When it comes down to it, Alex could really rise to occasion as Finnick, and under Gary Ross’s direction, we’re sure he’d shine. But since he turned down the lead role in another big-time YA adaptation (*sobs forever and ever*), the question might be, would he accept this one?

Kait, Rebekah & Tiffany: We are so against Alex Pettyfer as Finnick that the three of us teamed up to write this. Pettyfer is known for roles in not-so-great movies that failed to be the blockbusters they were built up as, such as I am Number Four, Beastly and In Time. We understand that many people find him very attractive, but his acting skills are lackluster at best and he comes off as extremely arrogant both on-screen and off. Not to mention that he allegedly spit in the face of The Mortal Instruments fandom, for which filmmakers and fans alike openly and enthusiastically courted him for the role of Jace, by asking for way more money than he’s worth. Being sexy is not enough. We need an actor who can be sexy AND display a complex range of emotions for our Finnick.

Tanvi: Everyone wants Alex Pettyfer to be Finnick now that he’s not Peeta. For a good while, I was convinced too that any YA adaptation is incomplete without Alex in it. But the casting people have started to look the other way – first Peeta, then Jace (The Mortal Instruments). And they seem to have good reason, Alex’s acting skills are average and we need someone who can really express himself on screen. He’s hot, no doubt, but something about his personality just seems off. Alex is a no-go for me, and personal bias is just not it. I really believe he can’t hold up as Finnick. We’re supposed to love Finnick – I don’t think I’ll ever look at Finnick the same way if Alex got cast.

Lindsay: Alex Pettyfer is all kinds of hot. When people wanted him for Peeta, it didn’t fit because Peeta isn’t HOT, he’s sweet. For Finnick? That might work. Let’s face it. Finnick is supposed to be beautiful. And have you seen those Magic Mike stills? He’s got a torso that can’t be beat. However, I’ve only seen him in I Am Number Four and his American accent is not so great. Now, that could be improved. But I’ve also heard some iffy things about him professionally and I wouldn’t want to bring drama to what appears to be a pretty calm, drama-free set. All that said, he’s not my number one choice, but I could give him the thumbs up if push came to shove.

Crystal: I’ve seen Alex Pettyfer in two movies, I Am Number Four and In Time. While he is good looking, he has a mean jock kind of look rather than a soft, understanding Finnick look. I can’t see him as our Finnick at all and I’d be so crestfallen if he got cast. He played a murderous gangster in In Time and I’ve always gotten the impression that he’s quite fond of himself, though I can’t remember where I got that impression. I hate to have the movie’s downfalls affect my impression of him, but I was extremely let down by I Am Number Four, very much including Pettyfer’s performance. My brother had told me it was great, but after I saw it I had to wonder what was wrong with him.

Personally, I really like Alex Pettyfer. And I think he’d do great as Finnick. Especially because Finnick really is (VERY basically) a more sophisticated version of the character he played in Beastly. Finnick puts on the arrogant, ladies man kind of charm, but underneath that, he can be (and IS) a great guy, a caring person, etc. Again, much like his character in Beastly, really. So I think that Finnick might be a very good role for him, because he’s already done the bare-bones, simplified version of Finnick, he’s already displayed the kind of shift of character we see in Finnick (as the series goes on, we see less and less of the arrogant Finnick and more of his…genuine, I guess…self), and with some work, I think he can pull it off.

Not to mention, the boy is just absolutely gorgeous. Seriously. I honestly wouldn’t care if he couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag- I’d watch him. He’s the only reason I watched Beastly (and own it), and the only reason I’ve watched, well…just about any other movie he’s in.

I do not want Alex to play Finnick. I’ll give you the fact that he’s hot but something about him just irritates me. Finnick is my favorite Hunger Games character and I don’t think Alex can pull of the sweet, cocky, and complex guy that Finnick is. Maybe if it was juct cocky…but sweet and complex? I think not.

Physically, Alex is very similar to Finnick. But I feel like he usually plays stiff roles, and that’s not what Finnick is like. If he was cast, I wouldn’t get mad, I’d just be a little disappointed. There are others that are better to be cast for Finnick than him.

I always thought of Finnick as being older. Like he won the games a few years ago, yet is still young at heart and flirts and shows bravado to hide the pain he’s endured after his naivety in what winning the games would be like. I think someone in their late 20′s early 30′s would work, especially with the main characters in their 20′s playing teens.

  Tom is mostly recognized as Loki in the movie Thor where his hair is dark, however, in real life it is naturally blond and a bit wavy which gives him the physical appearance needed for Finnick, along with a really interestingly handsome face. Besides he is a TERRIFIC actor that can definitely pull off the complexity of the character on screen, which I do not see Alex really ever able to potentially reach.

    And he's so close with Liam's brother Chris from "Thor" so he more than likely knows Liam as well. So there is a connection there.
    
    Plus, I agree on Finnick being played by an older actor of late 20s/early 30s and Tom just turned 31 last month and I totally think it could work.
    
    Sadly though he's going to be so busy with the "Thor" sequel and 2 other films shooting this year that I'm not sure if he can squeeze this in.

No. First of all, he just gets on my nerves, but let’s put that aside for moment. Yeah, he’s hot, okay, but that’s not why I’m such a huge Finnick fan. I mean, I guess his looks are pretty necessary to his character, but he had an emotion complexity that Katniss didn’t have, and I’m not sure if Pettyfer can pull it off. First off, I don’t even find him attractive. I know that’s something that is subjective and no one person will be attractive to all of us, especially to play our beloved Finnick.

I haven’t ever watched any of his movies honestly, so I can’t rightfully comment on his acting abilities, although most of what I’ve heard isn’t very encouraging.

My main complaint about Alex being our possible Finnick is how completely cliche and overdone it would be. Seriously, it seems like the only movies he’s been in are YA book to film adaptations. That’s just way too typical for my taste. The actor who plays Finnick should be someone unsuspected, that comes out of the blue and completely wows us (much like the character of Finnick himself), not someone who’s done a gillion of these kinds of movies and apparently hasn’t even done them very well.

Basically I’m just so SO against Alex for the role.

Yay! James Gaisford next week! I really like him and he would be great. If you don’t know who he is just watch some of MainstayPro’s videos. He is best in the second quarter quell video if you ask me, but if you want a more emotional look, just check out the Finnick and Annie Series.

I don’t even find him attractive. I only watched Beastly and that movie is awful. Both him and Vanessa Hudgens bugged the crap out of me. Literally! If he gets cast, I’m going berserk!!! And I’ll start a petition to boot him out. I’m that opposed to him as Finnick. Find someone else. PLEASE!!

And, the nail in the coffin (or, really, all the nails, the lid and the bottom) is his lack of acting skills. I do imagine Finnick older than most people. The actor for Finnick needs to be hot and display playfulness and despair.

That being said, whoever the two that mentioned Tom Hiddleston Hit. The. Mark. Seeing him in Thor and even the bit of screen time he had on War Horse left me with a great impression. That man can definitely act and he has those soft handsome 1920s type of features that I would imagine on Finnick. And he has the body to boot.

Tom Hiddleston DEFINITELY has my vote=]

I could never see Alex as Finnick. It doesn’t seem like he’s capable at pulling off complex roles. While Finnick is cocky that isn’t his defining quality, he’s also funny and charming which Alex is not. I’d be disappointed if he got the part but judging by the cast in The Hunger Games he won’t get picked. They picked actors who had actual talent and they all fit their roles.

When I was reading Catching Fire, I pictured Finnick as Alex the entire time!!! He’s perfect for the role of Finnick, and everyone who’s saying he’s so cocky- that’s exactly how Finnick is at the beginning! And he’s a really great actor, especially in I Am Number Four. I think he is exactly perfect for Finnick!

The whole time I was reading the book I pictured Alex Pettyfur as being Finnick Odair, except not a blonde guy but with a strawberry blonde reddish hair. Finnick is cocky, this guy’s perfect in my opinion

Awkward….I actually pictured Alex as Finnick while reading the books. Yes, he seems like kind of a jerk, but he seems better than most of the other choices on that list. He thinks he’s too good for teen movies anymore, so I don’t think he’d actually do it if they offered him the role.

While Alex can be good looking overall, his features alone aren’t as attractive. I just don’t see him being able to do Finnicks character any justice, I actually think he would hurt it. I also don’t find Alex to come off very deep or complex in any of his recent roles. While I did like I Am Number Four and think he did an okay job I don’t think he would do well to portray Finnicks sensitive side. I also don’t see him meshing very well with Jennifer Lawrence.

Everyone is saying that he should be Finnick because he is hot. Finnick is so much more he is one of the hardest characters to play. I don’t think that Alex is there yet in his acting to be able to play Finnick. You can’t just be hot you have to have the emotion Finnick goes from creepy, to happy, to sad, to happy, to creepy so Finnick takes a lot hard work to act. I just don’t think that Alex is ready just yet to Play Finnick.

While yes, I think Alex is sexy I agree that he just doesn’t have that broken down anguished feel about him. Finnick needs to be played by an actor with substance and I’m just not feelin’ that with Alex.

The first actor that came to mind when I though of Finnick, my favorite character, was Alex P, before I even heard he was being considered.
I think he absolutely looks the part and no other actor does for me, hes got the blond curls, strength, and when they describe Finnick in the book they make him sound like the most amazing looking man and I think that’s an important part of him, which I think Alex embodies.
He may not be the most amazing actor in the world but I don’t think he’s bad at all. I think if he tried he could definitely portray the gentle, kind, and broken side of Finnik which is also very important…
Overall I think Alex would be a great choice for the film and that no other actor can look the part of Finnick which I think is a key aspect, because if the actors don’t look the part then they’re automatically worse because they don’t seem like the character even if their acting is pretty good. Nothing bothers me more than an actor who looks nothing like the person described in the book, because it ruins the character.

The second Finnick was introduced in the book (with the sugar cubes, I believe)…my mind immediately picked out Alex Pettyfer! I can’t really imagine anybody else for the role, to me he kind of has that look like he would be from a place like District 4…and like they said, he’s beautiful! He does have a ways to go with his acting depth, but he’s not the worst I’ve seen (casting Keanu Reeves would be as close to rock bottom as we could get:P). And usually in the acting world, from what I’ve learned anyways, talent takes a back seat to looking right for the part…most of the time.

Also I think he ticks all the boxes of what he needs to act like to be Finnick. He is also extremely popular so people will want to see the film more because he is in it. I have watched many of the films which he is in, like Stormbreaker, which is action, like hunger games. I thought Stormbreaker was a very good film and he can act very well in action films.
