I hate to be a Douchy McNitpick, but I know a fair amount about Punch Brothers and thought I could add some helpful info.
First of all, they have got a couple of Grammy nominations. Chris Thile, the band’s founder and mandolin player, also has won a couple of Grammy awards (one with his previous group, Nickel Creek) and been nominated for three others. Chris Thile is really something extraordinary, a mix of prodigy, virtuoso, innovator, and artist that doesn’t come along very often. He’s sort of the modern-day mandolin equivalent of Mozart.
The other members of the band are impressive as well. The banjo player Noam Pikelny is a winner of the prestigious Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. The Bassist is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music (a classical music school with a reputation for being more prestigious and competitive than Juilliard), where he studied with famous bassist Edgar Meyer.
The Punch Brothers’ style is so varied that it’s difficult to pin down a single representative piece as an example. Rye Whiskey, while excellent and very fun, may be a bit more straightforward and bluegrassy than most of their stuff. The piece the band was formed to play is Chris Thile’s four-movement “The Blind Leaving the Blind” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moOqNjJZJAE), but that’s a bit ambitious to start with. “Me and Us” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmv5pdtCiu8) and “You Are” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CGhjUAfFRs) are a bit shorter, and probably about as close to typical for them as it’s possible to get.
They also do a whole lot of Radiohead covers–here’s “Packt Like Sardines in a Crushed Tin Box” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtujwGZYQa8) and the occasional classical piece–here they are playing a Bach Brandenburg Concerto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1NNBf7uVQ4&feature=related).
