Gary Ross Update: Nothing is Official

4/6/2012Catching Fire Movie

Despite news breaking out that Gary Ross will not be returning to direct Catching Fire, new sources say nothing is confirmed. There is still a chance Gary will return. As the news broke, Celebuzz was quickly there for a response to the panic.

Breathe (a little) easier Hunger Games fans!

While many have expressed their devastation at the news that director Gary Ross would not be returning to direct its sequel, Catching Fire, a source close to the situation tells Celebuzz that “nothing is official.”

After some lengthy negotiations, many are citing Gary’s film-making eye to be the main reason he would consider not coming back, not money.

Gary has directed a number of varying projects from Pleasantville to Seabiscuit, and The Playlist is reporting that the “burning desire simply isn’t there to spend another couple of years with Katniss in the Capitol.”

We know that we’re rooting for Gary to come back, Catching Fire just wouldn’t be the same without him!

What do you guys think? Do you want Gary to direct CF? Or would you like to see someone else take a shot? Sound off in the comments!

Now, we are just not sure what to think. But it is certainly good to know that there is still a chance we can keep our Hunger Games loving, Katniss finding director! Do you want him to stay on? Let us know!

I dont understand how “the desire simply isnt there,” When just a few weeks ago he was talking about how excited he was to work with Jen and get started on ‘Catching Fire’ :/

NOO. He has to direct Catching Fire!! He has to!!

  • someone is clearly messing with us.

everyones been acting like its not even a question whether gary will be doing it all.
woody and jen were in on it because of confidence in him.
he was passionate about catching fire whenever it came up and said he has ideas on how to make it slightly differently already.

    it wouldnt make sense.
and its not like catching fire doesnt shake things up quite a bit, for the “repetitive” argument.

  • It doesn’t make any sense to me why he would want out…
In every interview I’ve seen he has:
-talked about how much he loves the story
    -loved working with Suzanne Collins
-is excited to get started on Catching Fire
-thinks Jen is amazing and has a special kind of relationship with her
-loves Katniss’ character “arc” throughout the whole story
    etc. etc. etc.
Personally, I think he did a wonderful job with every apsect of the film, and I would be quite disappointed to see him go.
Besides, why wouldn’t he want to be part of this amazing franchise???
And if he doesn’t return, then you have to worry that the next director will completely destroy the franchise altogether…
    Go Team Gary!!!

This is exactly what i was thinking. How would he say he wasn’t interested all of a sudden?
Lionsgate must have gotten hot and bothered about something he did or perhaps something about that “shaky cam” thing. Lionsgate is paying him off.
      I hope.

  • He HAS to come back! He did a fantastic job with the first movie, and if they change directors they run the risk of the other movies not being as great as this one was. Stay, Gary, stay!

  • Gary Ross has to direct CF!!!!!!!
NJ ( means No Joke) and I mean NJ Gary Ross help make the 1st movie! Duh! If he quite now the freaking thing would be on frwaking fire!!!! And that’s form a 12 year old!!!! Um FYI I’m the 12 year old:%
( me crying if gary Ross dosen’t direct CF) :”"”(

  • Gary Ross, I think I speak for the whole of the Hunger Games fan base when I say that YOU MUST DIRECT CATCHING FIRE!!!! You did such an amazing job bringing the first book to life, and we trusted you to do the same for CF. If someone else directs it, there’s the risk of them TOTALLY changing the approach to the story. PLEASE COME BACK TO LIONSGATE AND DO CF!!!!

  • Someone else, please!

  • the camera work to me was perfect! everything about the movie is, if he doesn’t come back it wouldn’t be the same. not just for the fandom but to the cast as well.

The Hunger Games of course is beyond comparison to the Twilight series but as an example, Twilight came out with Catherine H. as its director and then New moon was directed by someone else who did a far better job than Catherine did so I wouldn’t lose complete hope on Catching Fire if someone else directed it, as long as they also worked with Suzanne which I’m sure they would

    • The director of New Moon did a better job because it was physically impossible to be worst than the first one…
THG is already really great, so we still might face someone who has a different take on the story and it might ruin it…

We can’t believe anything we read, until we hear the exact words from his mouth. So until then I shall believe that he is directing the rest of the triology. ;)
