At the KCA awards this past weekend, Celebuzz had the chance to talk with Jacqueline Emerson and asked her about those fan theories about Foxface committing suicide with the nightlock berries. Jacqueline gives her perspective and also talks about how many times she’s seen the film and more.
What do you think of the theory that Foxface knew what she was doing when she ate the nightlock berries Peeta left out? Let us know in the comments.
Thanks to Hunger Games Trilogy for the tip!

I don’t think Foxface would’ve committed suicide that late in the game. There were only 5 people left, and anyone in the group had a good shot at winning. I just don’t think she would’ve killed herself if she was that close. And if she had really wanted to kill herself, I think she would’ve done it way earlier in the games.

With respect, I don’t agree with that logic. Why kill yourself early in the game when everyone has a fairly good shot at making it? That is, unless you are trying to make some sort of statement, which we know wasn’t the case with Foxface. In the books, they talked about how different things happened and tributes no one expected to win ended up winning in past games (ex: the cold, when they flooded the arena… etc.). I think she was more likely to commit suicide once she saw the situation and who she was up against. Foxface knew that the game makers had tactics to herd the tributes together and I would imagine she analyzed the situation and took advantage of an easy, painless death by nightlock that was afforded by Katniss and Peeta.
Just my thoughts on the subject… I am assuming a bit, but I don’t think it is a stretch by any means considering the level of contextual detail we got from both the books and the movie.

I understand what you’re saying. The way I was looking at it was, if she just wanted to get out of the arena. If she just wanted to end the overall torment of the games, I think she would’ve killed herself earlier. Let’s be honest, there would’ve been plenty of ways to do it. I think if she had just wanted to end it, she would’ve killed herself earlier, before the real struggles started, not later, after she had gone through most of the games. What you’re saying about her realizing she couldn’t win makes a lot of sense, though.

We don’t have enough context clues in the book to show this, but I think the filmmakers made the suicide theory very plausible. Look at how Foxface was set up, she blistered the plant matching thing (or whatever it was) at the beginning, in her interview she talked about outsmarting her fellow tributes as her way to victory, and she clearly followed Katniss around by the end. Katniss practically screamed that line about nightlock and as you know, Foxface was close by.
Look at the remaining tributes:
Peeta – very strong
Katniss – strong archery skills
Cato – Big, strong, excellent in hand-to-hand, and strong with weapons
Come on. If all four of them were herded together like how they did with Katniss, Cato and Peeta, she’d be the first to die. You can’t deny that had gone through her head, if she’s as smart and cunning as both the book and movie made her out to be. It makes sense that she saw an opportunity with the nightlock and took the easy out seeing who she was up against.

I replied to your first post up there, and I believe it applies to this one as well. See above.
Also, I kind of assumed that she was already dead when Katniss screamed about the nightlock. Or at least had already eaten some.
