In a new interview with MTV News, Garrett Hedlund, one of the most prominent fancasts for the role of Finnick Odair, talks about why he didn’t take the coveted role:
“They did [approach me],” Hedlund admitted to MTV about almost playing Finnick in the upcoming “Hunger Games” sequel. “But I was working on this film at the time. We shot the whole film in 23 days and I was really immersed in it. I couldn’t get around [to reading the 'Hunger Games' novels].”
“Everybody around me is flipping out about the books, and I didn’t really have the time to sit down lately to read any book, not just ‘Hunger Games,’” he explained further. “But I’ve got a couple
on my plate that I’m looking forward to reading now.”

What do you think about Garrett passing on Finnick Odair? Are you happy the LionsGate seemed to have been listening to the fans on this one?

Personally think he looks more similar to Finnick I pictured than Sam Claflin does, however I don’t know anything about his previous acting, so I can’t comment on that…

He used to be my first choice (mainly phisically) for Finnick, but I honestly can’t imagine anyone but Sam now. Plus, I love the fact that he is a fan. I’m sorry, Garrett, you’ve lost your chance. I guess the odds were in Sam’s favour.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!!!!! He was my finnick! Obviously, he didnt realize how much this could’ve helped his career by getting this part. Its HIS fault we’re stuck with thaat stupid sam claflin! (who btw in my opinion, isnt NEARLY hot enough to play finnick) . At least lionsgate offered it to him, though. You let me down, Garrett. You REALLY let me down.

I always respect actors who turn down roles like this. He didn’t feel he could dedicate the time the series deserved (including finding time to read the series itself, not just a script), so he didn’t take the role. Likewise, I respect it when actors- even if they’re fan favorites- turn down offered roles purely because it’s not a project they want to do. I’d rather have an actor who wants to do it an has actually got the time to devote to it. I still wish they’d turned to some of the other fan favorites that *aren’t* Claflin, but at least they cast someone who wanted to do it and has time to do it well.

Ok, I can get turning down a movie because you haven’t read the books and have a bunch of other projects your working on…. but it was impossible to ignore the success of HG, and then you’re offered a major role in the sequel….. oh man is he gonna regret it…….

I think Sam Claffin is a way better Finnick than this guy. I am glad he turned it down.
