Official “Capitol” Portrait of Gale Hawthorne from Catching Fire!

3/7/2013Capitol Couture

Time for the next “Capitol” Portrait, and this time they are featuring, District 12′s own, Gale Hawthorne!

(Open Image in New Tab for Full Size)

We know looking at this from the theme of “Capitol” Portraits this may not make sense to some fans.  Gale is never in the Capitol, and is not a part of the Games, so why is he featured in this campaign?

Well that’s it isn’t it, despite the fact that we are all having fun and taking this from an inside the book perspective, this is still a marketing campaign, and as Gale IS an important character, many fans (book and film alike) will want to see him featured.  He was prominently showcased in the marketing for The Hunger Games as well, so it does makes sense that he is again for Catching Fire.

However, that aside, should he be presented in a “Capitol” Portrait?  Let us know your thoughts on his look, and the presentation in the comments below.

Also let us know who you think will be featured next!

  • Technically speaking since Gale has never been to the Capitol it wouldn’t make sense for him to have a Capitol Portrait. However, as mentioned in the article he is an important character to the story, and his role only grows from Catching Fire to Mockingjay. I also like the fact that he’s dressed in Standard D12 clothes. Because it differntiates between Gale, the Tributes/Victors, and the Capitol Citizens. However, I don’t understand why he is holding a white rose. when I thought that was something pretaining to Tributes/Victors. Maybe..since he did have his life “threatened” by President Snow.

I like that Gale got a portrait. I mean, again, it IS a marketing campaign. And I think it makes at least some sense because he was one of the people they interviewed back in D12 to get to know more about Katniss, so it’s not as though Capitol citizens have no idea who he is (I haven’t read the books in a while, but I assumed that when they mentioned talking to people in D12 it was probably like American Idol and such, where they air the interviews).

Finnick is next! <333 Can't wait to see his portrait!

  • They made a Gale figurine last year, the little plastic ones that came wrapped, and he was the only non-tribute included. I happened to get one (I only bought 7) and was happy to get it. Of course they want to do a character poster, and I get why they want them to be consistent. ANything else I think is over-thinking it.
I have a mixed opinion about the roses. On the one hand they’re super creepy in a good way. On the other hand, it just makes it look like the Bachelor.

Yeah, Gale being featured seems out of place but its like was said: this is a marketing campaign and you can’t leave Gale out of the Catching Fire campaign when he becomes a more prominent character. Also, who can complain of having to look at this handsome hunk? Not me, that’s for sure.

The next clue has me thinking of Finnick, which has me VERY EXCITED.

  • I think he should be included in the campaign. Afterall, the Capitol did present him as Katniss’ cousin.

  • to be perfectly honest, i haven’t really understood the concept of this marketing campaign, i don’t understand the ideas trying to be communicated here. They’re kinda’ve cheezy when compared to massive emotional volume of the story being told……especially with Quarter Quell of the second book. This idea: all the characters in a chair. Would’ve been better suited for Mockingjay. BUT, on the other hand, this pic of Gale is amazing. It’s the best of all the character posters! This is one that I understand.

I just don’t like that they gave him a rose. Thus far, the only people with roses are the victors that are in the 75th annual Hunger Games. I get why Gale has a photo as far as the movie and marketing are concerned, I just don’t get why he is presented with the symbol the other Tributes have. It just doesn’t make sense!

  • It has to be Finnick Catch, fish, four,Finnick

I totally understand why LG included a Gale portrait, since he is a major movie character. However, I think they could have been a lot more creative with this. Gale is NOT a tribute, and it makes no sense to have him sitting in the same chair as the tributes, and it really doesn’t make sense for him to be holding a rose. If you’re going to say “the rose represents Snow, and holding it means you’re on his kill list”, then Cinna and Haymitch should have been holding them as well!

I’d have much preferred Gale to be sitting on a rock, a log, or standing up. Or standing on overturned chair, that he obviously kicked over. Or to at least be stomping on the rose, not holding it. Or maybe, having actually snapped the rose in half! That’s the other problem I have, is that nothing in this portrait shows us Gale’s “fire” and rebellious nature; Peeta actually looked more rebellious in his portrait, than Gale does here.

Not impressed, LG. Not at all.

  • It makes no sense for Gale to be here…First he isn’t a tribute and in no way is he associated with the games itself. Second, it defaults the purpose of Capitol Couture since what he is wearing doesn’t look remotely couture.

I understand why he is here…for the sake of marketing and the love triangle… Doesn’t mean I agree with the choice of having him here.

  • I think gale has rose because he was affected by snow’s actions in a negative way? So they made him hold the rise to show that snow affected his life. Idk, but I love this picture anyway!!!!

It concerns me a bit, what if they changed the plot with gale? What if they took him to the Capitol for some stupid reason? O.o
