Catching Fire Costume Designer Discusses Katniss’ Wedding Dress

3/8/2013Capitol Couture, Catching Fire

20130308-075814.jpg

When Katniss’ Capitol Portrait was revealed earlier this week, the question on every fans mind seemed to be “Is that her wedding dress?” Well tributes we now have our answer. It is indeed!

Costume Designer Trish Summerville shared details on selecting Katniss’ dress with The Hollywood Reporter.

Katniss’ white gown is by a designer named Tex Saverio in Jakarta. He is amazing! I found his designs quite some time ago and saved his information for a perfectly fitting project, then came Catching Fire – perfect!” she said.

“We did several Skype calls with sketches to work together in designing the wedding dress. I had seen a dress he designed with a similar metal bodice, and I wanted to incorporate it into our wedding-dress design,” Summerville adds.

She also pointed out the bodice, a Swarovski-crystal-clad “organza corset under a metal cage.” The metal pieces rising up are meant to signify fire and flames, while layers of laser-cut feathers at the waist and shoulder tie in the film’s “Mockingjay” concept.

The skirt also has numerous layers of organza and chiffon ruffles giving it grandness but still making it seem airy and fluid for movement. As Summerville explains, “This is very important for the twirling/ spinning Katniss does onstage, per Caesar Flickerman’s request.”

Trish also shared a few details about Peeta’s suit and Effie’s dress from their portraits as well.

Summerville confirms that Effie Trinket’s red ruffled poster dress and matching shoes are indeed from the house of Alexander McQueen, as THR had reported. But she also reveals that Peeta’s suit is by a Korean designer that she is “obsessed with” called Juunj. “He is unbelievably talented,” she writes. “And Peeta’s boots are by Rick Owens. “

Now that we have confirmation, what do you think of the wedding dress? Are you surprised it was revealed before the film? Let us know in the comments!

2/25/2013Jennifer Lawrence

It’s back to business for newly crowned Best Actress, Jennifer Lawrence. With Catching Fire filming to finish over the course of the next couple weeks, Jennifer headed to the salon today to get back to her brown Katniss locks. Just last week, Josh Hutcherson went back to blonde to step back into Peeta’s shoes as well.

Jennifer revealed last night on the Oscar red carpet that they weren’t heading to Hawaii for reshoots as some suspected, but instead scenes that they needed to finish filming. If all goes according to plan shooting for Catching Fire should be done by mid-March. :)

Katniss and Peeta Named to EW’s “Top 10 YA Couples”

2/18/2013Article

YA adaptions are all the rage at the moment, what with books such as Warm Bodies, Beautiful Creatures, and the Mortal Instruments hitting theaters this year alongside Catching Fire.  Keeping in the spirit, EW has named their top 10 YA couples and Panem’s star-crossed lovers, Katniss and Peeta have made the list.

Here’s what they had to say about our favorite duo:

Katniss and Peeta, The Hunger Games trilogy

First Encounter: It began with a loaf of bread and an act of kindness…. Though Peeta, a baker’s son, made his first lasting impression on Katniss when he threw her a loaf of burnt bread that allowed her hungry family to eat, the two don’t really get to know each other until they are sent to compete in the nationally televised fight-or-die reality show/sacrifice ritual, The Hunger Games.
Defining Moment: With Peeta injured, ill, and on the verge of death, Katniss kisses Peeta knowing cameras will capture their courtship and sponsors will send them food and medical supplies. It’s her version of returning the favor.
Relationship Challenges: Because of her hard-scrabble background Katniss almost unwaveringly looks out for herself, so there’s little room for anyone else in her heart or mind — though a certain rugged hunting partner named Gale does confuse her feelings. Later in the series, a drastic shift in Peeta’s personality (after he’s tortured with tracker jacker venom) complicates the showmancers’ yin-ang-yang dynamic further.
Why They Work: Peeta is a fundamentally good-hearted, smooth-talking person with sensitivity that balances out Katniss’s edge, self-consciousness, and lack of social propriety. He truly loves her, which she needs and appreciates — even if it takes her a little while to realize it.

You can check out the full list at EW.

Jennifer Lawrence Discusses Katniss as a Role Model with the LA Times

1/17/2013Article

In a great new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Jennifer Lawrence discusses her thoughts on Katniss being a role model for young girls.

She’s also acutely aware of the influence she has on young women, particularly now that she’s playing the strong, self-possessed heroine Katniss Everdeen in the movies adapted from Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy that began with “The Hunger Games.”

“I was a teenager too — hard to believe, right? — and remember reading magazines and tabloids,” Lawrence says. “I don’t think the media realizes how much they glorify anorexia. You have an actress who loses a bunch of weight for a role and she’s explaining how she lost it. ‘I ate one grape a day and I lost 25 pounds and I was dangerously underweight and now I get awards.’

“With Katniss, I never meant to make a big deal about it. It was just important she was strong and a warrior instead of being wasted away, especially when, without a doubt, she’s going to be a role model for a lot of young girls. I thought it would be better for them to say, ‘I could look like Katniss’ rather than ‘I’ll never be able to look like that if I keep eating.’”

The article (which you can read in full here) goes on to discuss working on Silver Linings Playbook and working with Director David O. Russell and co-star Bradely Cooper. It also includes this “tender” discussion of her parents support of her career.

Lawrence calls her collaboration with Russell “the best experience” of her life, an assessment supported by the way her parents reacted to the movie when they saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Lawrence found them after the movie ended and immediately noticed that her dad, a man she has never seen cry, was “covered in tears.” So, according to her father, at least, Lawrence proceded to yell in front of everyone, “Dad, you’re crying!” — a “betrayal” he still gives her grief for.

“Seeing that, especially knowing how much my parents gave up for me, meant so much,” Lawrence says. “They gave up their friends, their assets so I could act. So their loving what I do takes away some of the guilt, I guess. As much as it’s nice to be acknowledged by your peers, your parents’ approval means the most. It’ll probably always be that way.”

UPDATE! MORE New Stills from ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Katniss, Peeta, Gale, Prim, Haymitch, Plutarch, Snow!

1/9/2013Stills & Images

To keep us excited (and drooling), Entertainment Weekly has released more stills from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.  These reveal our first looks at Katniss and Peeta on the Victory Tour and Gale in District 12.

”These are kids growing up in war who physically, emotionally can’t love somebody,” says Jennifer Lawrence about the uncomfortable triangle between District 12′s battle-weary Katniss, Peeta, and her childhood friend Gale that began in The Hunger Games. ”Katniss thinks she can’t have a crush on a boy because she’s worried about survival every single day. And she can’t be a normal 16-year-old meeting her friend out in the woods and practicing kissing because that’s not the world that they live in.”

”Jen and Liam have amazing chemistry,” says director Francis Lawrence of his young stars. ”They have a nice moment right before Katniss is reaped that is the very first thing we shot. And then when Gale has been brought in from the whipping, that’s another really nice moment they have alone.” ”This the book where you have to understand the pull Katniss feels to both Peeta and Gale,” say producer Nina Jacobson.

Update!!! More stills have been released!

Like this one featuring a very grown up looking Prim and Mrs. Everdeen!

And one more!! Our first look at Plutarch AND Haymitch!

And another…President Snow!!
